A method for converting an ?-aminocarboxylic acid or ester thereof into the corresponding lactam, comprising the steps (a) providing the ?-aminocarboxylic acid or ester thereof and (b) contacting the ?-aminocarboxylic acid or ester thereof with an ?-lactam hydrolase in an aqueous solution.
