Provided is a fluorine-containing copolymer which is capable of providing an ion exchange membrane that is not adversely affected very much by impurities in an aqueous alkali chloride solution in electrolysis of the aqueous alkali chloride solution or the like. A fluorine-containing copolymer of a fluorine-containing olefin and a fluorine-containing monomer having a carboxylic acid functional group, wherein the components contained in the CClF2CF2CClFH-soluble content and having a common logarithm of the molecular weight M (logM) of 2.0-3.5 are 10% by mass or less in 100% by mass of the components contained in the CClF2CF2CClFH-soluble content and having a common logarithm of the molecular weight M (logM) of 2.0 or more, is used.
