The engine has a cylinder head cover (19) integrally formed with a cylinder head, and a cam shaft (1) i.e. intake camshaft, provided with sliding cams (3). A locking device comprises two locking elements, where one of the locking elements co-operate with multiple detent recesses of the other locking element. A sliding sleeve (16) is positioned radially outside on the sliding cams and axially displaceable together with the sliding cams. The locking elements co-operate together with actuators (7), where the former locking element is supported in the cylinder head or the cylinder head cover.
