Controlling the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter

A method for controlling the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter 54 comprising the steps of estimating a value of the soot mass accumulated inside the DPF by a model based on an equation, taking into account at least the pressure loss across the DPF, the volumetric amount of the exhaust gas which flows through the DPF per unit time, the rotational speed of the engine and coefficients determined through a linear regression; comparing the estimated soot mass with a predetermined threshold of soot mass corresponding to a predetermined density level of soot inside the DPF; starting a regeneration phase of said DPF when the estimated soot mass is equal or greater than said predetermined threshold of soot mass, to prevent overloading of soot.
