PURPOSE: A robot cleaner and a control method thereof are provided to precisely detect obstacles in a three-dimensional manner and create a cleaning map with precision. CONSTITUTION: A robot cleaner comprises an obstacle sensing unit and a control unit(200). The obstacle sensing unit includes a light source module(111) projecting an optical pattern and an optical pattern sensor which senses an obstacle using the optical pattern and outputs obstacle information. The control unit adjusts the exposure time of the light source module according to the wavelength of the optical pattern to control the energy of the optical pattern.
