PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfy both the requirement for improvement in shifting responsiveness in forward traveling and the requirement for forming shelf pressure in reverse when an automatic transmission has a frictional connecting element connected both in predetermined forward speed change stage and in reverse state. SOLUTION: In the third speed and in the fifth speed, a switching valve 212 is put in a first switching position, so that controlled oil pressure from a linear solenoid valve 202 is supplied from an oil passage 241 through the switching valve 212 to a third brake 80 while being subjected to the action of a small-capacity accumulator 243, and at this time, a large-capacity accumulator 262 and the third brake 80 are interrupted from each other by the switching valve 212. In reverse, the switching valve 212 is put in a second switching position, so that controlled oil pressure from the linear solenoid 202 is supplied from a branch oil passage 246 by-passing the switching valve 212 to the third brake 80 while being subjected to the action of the small-capacity accumulator 243, and at this time, the third brake 80 and the large-capacity accumulator 262 are communicated to each other.
