In a multicarrier environment containing carriers from different networks (GSM, 3G, CDMA, LTE etc.), many of which will not be relevant for a given terminal, cell search and synchronization is made more efficient by acquiring an observation signal for each carrier from which a power measure and a non-circularity measure can be calculated in order to rank each carrierâ s applicability. The non-circular statistics may relate to signal precoding in the complex plane (eg. Alamouti) or the modulation scheme used (eg. BPSK, GMSK), thus allowing carriers to be distinguished according to their origin. The non-circularity measure is determined via a log-likelihood ratio test of the covariance matrices.
