A device (200) includes a display (910) that displays a number of layers of content (910A, 920A, 9230A) , a display controller for controlling an output to the display, a gaze tracking system to track a user of the device's gaze, a face tracking system to determine a distance of the face of the user of the device from the display, and an accelerometer for determining device orientation. A processor of the device receives gaze tracking information, device orientation, and the determined distance, the processor determines, at least in part on the basis of the received data, in which mode of viewing the user of the device is engaging (e.g. reading, skimming or picture viewing), the processor outputs to the display controller an instruction to modify at least one of the of layers of content. The display controller modifies the at least one of the layers of content by way of one of sharpening an image displayed on the at least one layer, and blurring an image displayed on the at least one layer.
