The method involves determining mass (M) of a vehicle by a determining module (1), and measuring acceleration for current transmission ratio (a-mes) by a measuring module (2). A current engine torque value for a current transmission ratio (R) is estimated by an estimating module (3). Potential longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle for a potential transmission ratio value is estimated by a calculation module (13) based on the potential engine rate for the transmission ratio value while considering calculated theoretical maximum engine torque. An independent claim is also included for a device for estimating potential longitudinal acceleration for potential transmission ratio of a motor vehicle.
