This invention relates to a method for axial positioning of a first pipe with respect to a second pipe for the welding of said pipes at their ends thereof of which the faces have been previously machined and define a joint plane, according to which a plurality of jacks are distributed around the first and second pipes, and said jacks are connected to a central processing and control unit. According to the invention, the movement of each of the jacks is controlled with respect to said external surface of the first and/or second pipe so as to align and center the internal end surfaces of the first and second pipes.
