Optimisation of diesel locomotive operation modes is executed by connecting two independent drives to one generator where the first independent drive is connected at low and medium loads and in idle mode. Its shaft is rotating the generator armature. At medium loads the second independent drive is connected, its shaft is rotating the generator frame.
