PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling the speed of an induction motor is provided to improve the performance of a vector control type inverter in a continuous process line without using a tension sensor and a position sensor. CONSTITUTION: A speed detector(19) detects the rotation speed of an induction motor. A diameter calculation unit(11) calculates the diameter of material using the maximum speed and linear velocity command of the induction motor. A command speed calculating unit(1) calculates a command speed using the linear speed command and the diameter of the material. A torque limit calculating unit(12) calculates a torque limit value using a tension command, the minimum diameter of the material, and a friction loss compensation. A torque limit unit(5) limits a command speed according to the torque limit value.
