<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anthracene derivative having jointly a characteristic peculiar to anthracene and high polymerizability, and to provide a method for producing the anthracene derivative. <P>SOLUTION: This anthracene derivative is represented by formula (1). (In the formula (1), X is an aromatic group which may have a (n<SB POS="POST">1</SB>+1)-valent substituent, and Y is an aromatic group which may have a (n<SB POS="POST">2</SB>+1)-valent substituent, wherein n<SB POS="POST">1</SB>and n<SB POS="POST">2</SB>are each independently an integer of 1-3. R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.
