<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element which has strong chemical resistance, is stable and has excellent polarization separation performance. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing element has a plurality of titanium dioxide nanotubes 2 arrayed in a predetermined direction provided on a substrate 1, and has a structure in which a metal is embedded in the titanium dioxide nanotube.
