<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit recording maintaining recording quality to be carried on even when LEDs and the like fail during the recording and a user to choose between recording giving priority to the maintenance of the recording quality and recording giving priority to the recording speed over the recording quality. <P>SOLUTION: The recorder includes a recording execution section executing recording by discharging a photoreactive liquid from the rows of nozzles of a recording head, a light irradiation section having a plurality of rows of light-emitting elements which are made by lining up the light-emitting elements causing the photoreactive liquid to chemically change by irradiating with light the photoreactive liquid in the same direction as the rows of nozzles, a failure detection section detecting failure of the light-emitting elements and a control section controlling the actions of the recording execution section and the actions of the light irradiation section, respectively. The control section has a first recording mode giving priority to the maintenance of recording quality and a second recording mode giving priority to the setting of recoding finishing time before and after the failure as action modes into which it moves when the failure detection section detects the failure of the light-emitting elements.
