<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration of accuracy in regulatory control of image quality caused by detection error of a toner patch due to curling tendency without causing an increase in downtime and power consumption of an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In carrying out regulatory control of image density using an output value of an optical sensor 69, whether or not each toner patch satisfies a predetermined abnormal condition is determined, in which difference between the maximum value and the minimum value obtained from among a plurality of sensor output values that corresponds to the specific toner patch.
