<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system, imaging apparatus and camera that have not only a wide angle of view and a zooming ratio at a wide angle end but also a high optical performance despite a short entire lens length and a small size. <P>SOLUTION: The zoom lens system, imaging apparatus, and camera have a plurality of lens groups comprising at least one lens element, and comprise, in order from an object side to an image side, a first lens group of a negative power, a second lens group of a positive power, a third lens group of a negative power, and a fourth lens group of a positive power. The third lens group comprises two or fewer lens elements, the fourth lens group comprises two or fewer lens elements, and the first lens group has at least one air interval between lens elements composing the first lens group.
