A variable update step size is stipulated in proportion to the size ratio or the size difference between: a first residual error signal obtained using an adaptive filter coefficient string obtained from the operation until the previous time of an adaptive equalizer; and a second residual error signal obtained using a prior update adaptive filter coefficient string for which the adaptive filter coefficient string obtained from the operation until the previous time of the adaptive equalizer has been coefficient updated using any prior update step size.
