The sensor has a sensor element (3) i.e. electrical resistance thermometer, enclosed by a metal sensor housing (1) and cooperating with an in-situ calibration part arranged in the sensor housing. The calibration part comprises an integrated switch unit switching a control unit (5) from normal measuring mode to calibration mode, if the control unit determines the presence of necessary conditions e.g. electrical power for heating the sensor element, for calibration. The control unit starts calibrating the sensor element. A reference cell (6) partly surrounds the sensor element. An independent claim is also included for a method for operation of a temperature sensor.
