In a process for building tyres for vehicle wheels, the building of a belt structure of a crown structure comprises: sequentially depositing, on a first conveyor belt (11a), a predetermined number of strip-like elements; sequentially depositing, on a second conveyor belt (lib), a predetermined number of strip-like elements; transferring the strip-like elements from the first conveyor belt (11a) to a forming support (100) for building a first belt layer on the forming support (100); moving the forming support (100) at the second conveyor belt (11b); transferring the strip¬ like elements from the second conveyor belt (lib) to the forming support (100) for building a second belt layer on the forming support (100) in a radially outer position with respect to the first belt layer. Transferring the strip- like elements from the first conveyor belt to the forming support (100) is at least partially carried out simultaneously with at least part of depositing the strip- like elements on the second conveyor belt (11b).
