PURPOSE: A chiller and a control method thereof are provided to improve the working efficiency of a chiller while reducing the generation of surge. CONSTITUTION: A chiller comprises a bypass valve for high temperature gas and a control unit(110). The bypass valve for high temperature gas bypasses high pressure high temperature coolant discharged from a compressor to an inlet of the compressor. The control unit partitions an area for surge while setting reference data for controlling the bypass valve for high temperature gas. The control valve controls the compression ratio of the compressor by controlling the bypass valve for high temperature gas.
