A vehicle powertrain comprises a combustion engine 10 and an electric motor 70. The electric motor 70 is capable of powering the vehicle at velocities including zero, while the combustion engine 10 is only capable of powering the vehicle at velocities greater than zero. A corresponding transmission comprises: a power input shaft 20 and a power output shaft 60, the input and output shafts being connected by a clutch 50; an electrical motor 70 that rotates with the output shaft; and an electrical battery 90 connected to an electrical generator 40 and the electrical motor 70. The invention is suitable for use in hearses, limousines and other applications which do not require an engine launch mode.
