573,078. Bombs etc.; torpedoes. BATH & PORTLAND STONE FIRMS, Ltd., and PICTOR, A. N. Oct. 5, 1942, Nos. 13974 and 17969. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A hollow-charge bomb, grenade or the like, or torpedo has the hollow at the front end of the charge formed as a concavity, as distinct from the conical cavity described in Specification 280,030/11, [Class 9 (ii)], and the cavity has a lining 2 of a material of low melting-point, e.g. of a plastic such as " Perspex " or " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Marks). The missile has a base fuze 11 which may be of the momentum type or a direct-impact fuze fired by an axial rod extending from the nose through the charge 8. The burst is effected before the charge can make contact with the surface attacked by the provision of a collapsable ballistic head 3 of suitable length or by a rod or like distance-piece. The cavity may be empty or may contain various bodies including incendiary material. As shown, it contains a so-called " pellet " 9 of cup-shape. The pellet, if of steel, has a coating of ferro-cyanide at the forward portions 10; the blast closes up the pellet, as shown at 10<1>, and hardens the pointed end to facilitate penetration. -A solid pellet may be used. In a further modification, the nose 3 may be of armour-piercing steel which may be combined with an incendiary filling. The casing 1 may also be of a plastic, in which case its thickness is increased. Specification 561,927 also is referred to. |
