<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus whose setup time is short. <P>SOLUTION: When determining that the image forming apparatus has setup timing (S101), developing bias V<SB>bias</SB>is set to a first condition (S102), and a first image density pattern having high density and a second image density pattern having low density are formed on an intermediate transfer belt (S103), next the developing bias V<SB>bias</SB>is set to a second condition (S104), and the first image density pattern having the high density and the second image density pattern having the low density are formed on the intermediate transfer belt (S105). The image density pattern formed on the first condition is detected by an ADC sensor (S106), and continuously the image density pattern formed on the second condition is detected by the ADC sensor (S107). Optimum developing bias is calculated and set from the respective detection values of the first image density pattern in the first and the second conditions (S108).
