PURPOSE: A washing machine is provided to sense the weight and vibration of a washing tub by using a non-contact method. CONSTITUTION: An optical sensor(30) is installed at a door(3). The optical sensor includes a light emitting unit and a light receiving unit. The light emitting unit changes light irradiating direction according to movement of the door. The light receiving unit receives the light radiated from the light emitting unit. The control unit determines whether the door is opened and closed through analysis of a signal outputted from the light receiving part. The control unit controls operation of a washing machine(5) according to the result.
