Class 140' A leather substitute is made by beating washed chrome leather cuttings, other than pig leather cuttings, to produce a smooth pulp containing 45 grammes of dry fibres per litre, greasing the pulp, rendering it alkaline, adding blood and natural or synthetic rubber latex and a vulcanizing accelerator, then sodium sulphide, sulphur, colophony, a dye, ammonium sulphate, formalin, sulphuric acid and ammonia, pressing the material into a sheet, drying and vulcanizing the latter, and coating its surface with a casein or nitro-cellulose dressing, which may be coloured.
