<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information providing system in which, even in the case where information on a network is targeted, a position relating to the information can be provided and displayed more easily on a map, and an information providing method. <P>SOLUTION: An information providing system comprises a navigation device 22 which displays a map on a display device 23, and is configured to refer to disclosed information on a public network 40 over the public network 40. The information providing system further comprises a POI information creation section 16 which refers to a home page 30 on the basis of a URL indicating a place of the home page 30 on the network, acquires positional information corresponding to the referenced home page 30 from the home page 30 and converts the acquired positional information into display information that is a coordinate system for display of the navigation device 22.
