The method (10) involves predetermining a threshold temperature (12) of a clutch of a coupling unit. Temperatures of the clutch at first and second times are determined (14, 18). Temperature variation between the first and second times is calculated (22). A determination is made to check whether the temperature of the clutch at the second time exceeds the threshold temperature (20). The coupling unit is cooled (26) when the temperature of the clutch at the first or second time exceeds the threshold temperature or when the exceedance of the clutch temperature is predicted. An independent claim is also included for a device for thermally controlling a coupling unit placed between an energy source and a power transmission unit transmitting power to a traction system of a vehicle.
