The method involves introducing ammonia into an inner side of an exhaust line (2) via an ammonia injection device (8). Durations of pressure increase of cartridges (9, 9') of the ammonia injection device are calculated. Durations of the pressure increase of the cartridges are compared to determine first and second minimum pressure rise durations, where the second minimum pressure rise duration is greater than the first minimum pressure rise duration. A determination is made whether one of the cartridges with the first minimum pressure rise duration is a starting cartridge. An independent claim is also included for a device for injecting ammonia inside an exhaust line to perform a chemical purification method.
