Disclosed are a passive optical network system, an upgrading method, and an optical distribution network. When an optical network unit is an optical network unit in a time division multiplexing passive optical network system, a wavelength division multiplexing device receives an optical signal sent by the optical network unit in the time division multiplexing passive optical network system, and sends the optical signal to a first optical line terminal through an optical splitter; alternatively, when the optical network unit is an optical network unit in a wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network system, the wavelength division multiplexing device receives an optical signal sent by the optical network unit in the wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network system, and sends the optical signal to a second optical line terminal through a first arrayed waveguide grating unit, thereby meeting the requirement of upgrading the optical network unit on demand in the optical network system, reducing the cost of upgrading the system, and improving the level of user experience.
