<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a back strength assist device having a fail safe mechanism for holding a wire so that the wire does not extend, to relax a user's posture when a motor stops. <P>SOLUTION: The back strength assist device 100 includes: a lower back harness 20 installed on the lower back of a user; a wire winding device 30 installed to the lower back harness 20; a back harness 10 installed to the back of the user; and a wire Wa extended from the wire winding device 30 and fixed to the back harness 10. The wire winding device 30 has a pulley 22 for taking up the wire Wa, a motor 34 for driving the pulley 22, and a worm gear 37 transmitting a torque between the pulley and the motor 34.
