<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a stranger from speculating a predetermined pattern after the fact in an authentication method for inputting the predetermined pattern to a display surface. <P>SOLUTION: An authentication device according to the present invention detects that an indicator such as a finger passes through authentication areas A1-A9 to be defined apart from the display surface, determines whether or not the detected trace matches the predetermined pattern, and authenticates a user. The authentication device specifies a position where a variation in the moving direction is a predetermined threshold or more, and when the position is not included in the authentication area, corrects the position so as to come closer to a nearest authentication area.
