<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect defective pixels more easily and accurately. <P>SOLUTION: A neighboring region extraction unit extracts a neighboring region of a pixel of interest on an image as a neighboring region of interest. A texture direction determination unit specifies a direction having a small change in pixel value between the pixel of interest and a pixel of the same color as a texture direction in the neighboring region of interest. A defective pixel detection unit calculates Laplacians using some pixels centered on the pixel of interest and continuously aligned in the texture direction, and compares a plurality of Laplacians calculated for respective different sets of pixels with a threshold to identify whether the pixel of interest is a defective pixel. The use of the plurality of Laplacians allows a defective pixel to be detected easily and accurately, no matter whether the pixel of interest is an independent defective pixel or a continuous defective pixel.
