The system includes a vehicle energy absorption element which is activated, in case of detection of vehicle imminent collision. The energy absorption element is formed as a bag or a horizontally displaceable bumper element. The damping of energy absorption element is adjustable in response to the detected collision object. The vehicle imminent collision is automatically detected, before the activation of energy absorbing element, and a warning is output to the driver of vehicle for applying partial braking to vehicle.
