The device has a rotational speed sensor (10) e.g. crankshaft sensor, detecting rotational speed of an internal combustion engine (11). An evaluation unit (12) is connected with the rotational speed sensor, and recognizes misfueling of a fuel tank of a vehicle to evaluate rotation non-uniformity of the combustion engine by the rotation speed sensor. The evaluation unit compares the evaluation of the rotation non-uniformity of the rotation speed target course with actual course and/or an actual value of rotation speed. An independent claim is also included for a method for recognizing misfueling of a vehicle.
