The device (12) has an electrically drivable additional pump (10) activated during hydraulic pressure request in a switching-on condition to meet the request. The activation of the pump is withdrawn, and an alternative measure is taken by the device to meet the request during occurrence of malfunction of the pump. The pump is re-activated after performing the alternative measure only when the malfunction is determined to be no longer present in the pump and when the switching-on condition for the pump is not met after the malfunction of the pump is corrected. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a power train of a vehicle.
