<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device capable of detecting the size of a document irrespective of the thickness of the document. <P>SOLUTION: In an image reading device, in a case where a cover 3 is closed and the angle of the cover 3 is changed, image density of a line sensor 203 in a main scanning direction is detected at each of plural angles. In detected outputs at the plural angles, an output does not change in a place where a document is present, and an output changes in a place where the document is absent.
