The vehicle navigation system has a display unit (10) and an operating unit (11), which is provided for a user input for a virtual vehicle position. A processing unit (12) is provided for displaying a realistic imaging in form of three-dimensional imaging of an environment of the virtual vehicle position on the display unit. The operating unit has control elements (13,14) for moving the virtual vehicle position along a road layout. An independent claim is included for a method for modifying the virtual vehicle position in the vehicle navigation system.
