The belt tensioner has a belt buckle (10), where a retractor spool (20) is slidably mounted on a tensioning tube (18). A connecting element (12) is provided for connecting the retractor spool with the belt buckle. An actuating element (28) is provided, which consists of a shape memory alloy and a return spring (40). The actuating element is an elongated wire of the shape memory alloy, and is tensioned in actuating direction (R) between the retractor spool and a vehicle-fixed support block (30).
