<p>The method involves introducing a weight-optimized metal precursor material into a closed forging die, by performing the die forging process with a tool box and subsequent extrusion process. The metal precursor material is transferred to a journal blank that is equipped with a flared cap on the wheel side of the axle journal. A centered recess is formed corresponding to the overall length of a mandrel after subsequent processing along the central axis of the mandrel, to form an internal portion of the axle journal (8).
