Electrochemical battery cell (1) comprises a housing (2), a cathode (3), a porous insulating layer (4), an electrolyte containing a conducting salt, and a positive electrode (5). The electrolyte is based on SO 2. The space between the electrodes is arranged so active material deposited on the cathode during charging can come into contact with the anode, so locally limited short circuit reactions can occur.
