PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce power consumption by decreasing the number of refresh operations for retaining data. CONSTITUTION: A memory cell array(180) includes memory cells which are arranged with a matrix shape. A refresh timing detection circuit is operably connected to the memory cell array and includes a reference cell(152) and a comparator(190). The memory cell includes a first transistor and a first capacitive element which is connected to the first transistor. The reference cell includes a second transistor and a second capacitive element which is electrically connected to the second transistor and is electrically connected to the comparator.
