PURPOSE: A composition containing Perilla frutescens leaf extract is provided to ensure strong antioxidation effect and to prevent and treat liver diseases. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating liver diseases contains Perilla frutescens leaf extract. The Perilla frutescens leaves are cultivated using sugar water. A functional food composition for protecting liver and improving liver function contains the Perilla frutescens extract. The pharmaceutical composition and food composition contain caffeic acid as an active ingredient.
