The device (100) has a transistor (105) e.g. PNP-bipolar transistor, whose control input (111) is coupled with a signal output (102) of a signal transmitter (101). Capacitors (110, 122) are switched between a terminal (106) i.e. collector, of the transistor and a reference potential. An evaluating unit (108) i.e. microcontroller, evaluates amplitude of electrical voltage (U1, U2) that exists at the capacitors, and is coupled with the capacitors. A decoupling unit (123) decouples the terminal from the capacitors to prevent discharge of the capacitors via a parasitic element of the transistor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a capacitive operating device in a household appliance.
