The method involves moving bread slice packets (46) from a starting position into a packaging position. Packaging film webs (32) are merged at a side of the bread slice packets turned away from the film webs. The film webs are welded by forming two parallel spaced side weld seams. The packaging film webs are merged in a region of a packet retaining compartment (48) at a side edge and welded by forming closed bottom weld seams. Packaged bread slice packets are separated from the packaging film webs in a region between the two side weld seams. An independent claim is also included for a cutting machine.
