<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to locate a fault when a communication trouble has occurred in a network communication system where communication is performed by a synchronous method based on a request and a response in pair. <P>SOLUTION: Hosts 2a, 2b and 2c respectively are connected to a network 3 via peripheral control processing devices 1a, 1b and 1c. When there is no response from a host device, a peripheral control processing device 1b on the receive side returns a reply on failure of response to a peripheral control processing device 1a on the transmit side. Also, when no reply is obtained for a request, the peripheral control processing device 1a on the transmit side broadcasts connection confirmation to the other peripheral control processing devices. Furthermore, if request data for retry is sent again while a reply has been returned, the peripheral control processing device 1b on the receive side reports a failure in receive processing as an event which requires attention.
