For the purpose of power factor correction, an inductor (7) is supplied with an input voltage (Vin), a controllable switch element (13) coupled with the inductor (7) being opened or closed to optionally charge or discharge the inductor (7). The discharge current (lL) of the inductor (7) is supplied to an output (5) via a diode (8). When an overvoltage is detected, the system is switched to overvoltage operation in order to make sure by repeatedly switching the switch element (13) on and off that the diode (8) is conductive.
