<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform combustion which excels in thermal efficiency without being associated with degradation of emission performance or occurrence of abnormal combustion over a wide load area. <P>SOLUTION: In a predetermined load area (A2) in a low engine speed area, a multi-phase CI mode is executed where mixed gas X1 and X2 formed at different locations in a combustion chamber 6 based on fuel jetted from an injector 21 at a plurality of times is combusted by self ignition. Meanwhile, in an area (A4) where load is higher than an area where the multi-phase CI mode is executed, by executing fuel jetting P4 and P5 which jets fuel from the injector 21 at a jetting pressure of 30 MPa or greater and spark ignition by an ignition plug 20 within a period between a later stage of a compression process and an initial stage of an expansion process, a rapid retard SI mode is executed where the mixed gas is rapidly combusted by the fuel jetting P4 and P5 by flame propagation after a predetermined period has passed from a compression top dead center. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
