<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a sulfur-containing aromatic polymer in high yield even in a relatively mild reaction condition. <P>SOLUTION: The process for producing a sulfur-containing aromatic polymer includes a step 1 of reacting bis(4-mercaptophenyl) sulfone in the presence of an alkaline metal to obtain an alkaline metal salt of the bis(4-mercaptophenyl) sulfone, and a step 2 of reacting the alkaline metal salt of the bis(4-mercaptophenyl) sulfone obtained in the step 1 with a dihalogenated biaryl represented by formula (2).
