Provided are: a spherical metal oxide powder which has excellent thermal insulation properties and reduced bulk density; and a method for producing the spherical metal oxide powder. A metal oxide powder which is mainly composed of spherical independent particles and has a specific surface area as determined by a BET method of 400 m2/g or more but 1,000 m2/g or less, a pore volume as determined by a BJH method of 2 mL/g or more but 8 mL/g or less, and an oil absorption of 250 mL/100 g or more. A method for producing a hollow spherical metal oxide powder, which comprises a step for forming an O/W/O emulsion.
